My studio (okay, apartment!) is located in the Yonge/Carlton area. After setting your goals, lessons will be a two-way dialogue involving theory, application of theory, and lots of playing. The atmosphere is both fun and challenging. My teaching style is relaxed and patient, but expect a few jokes along the way too :)
Focus will be on the basics such as the major scale, minor scale, dominant scale (mixolydian mode) and rhythm. You will use them as a basis for melodic development, chording and harmonic movements. Barry Harris' approach and "sixth-diminished" scales will be covered for those with a strong grasp of the major, minor, whole tone, diminished and dominant scales.
Some words of encouragement
Learning to play piano and to improvise is not the easiest thing in the world. A number of years ago, while first learning to improvise, I was at a jam session when someone mentioned that I suck! Not the most encouraging thing to hear since I was only starting and struggling with theory, group interplay, creating melodic lines, harmonizing ... yet, over time these things get easier and easier. You begin discovering things on your own, and eventually, you get good. And then you are not only impressing your friends and peers, but you begin discovering new ways of expression and communication through music.
